Fostoria Glass Works established its business in Fostoria, Ohio in 1887, hence the name Fostoria. Because of lack of resources, Fostoria relocated to Moundsville, West Virginia in 1891 where gas and coal were plentiful and remained there until 1986 when the company ceased operations. Most of the workers moved with the company to Moundsville to work in the new state-of-the-art plant. Remembered as a well-respected American company, Fostoria’s history is still celebrated at the Fostoria Glass Museum in Moundsville. Fostoria American, is the “holly grail” of collectors.

During the depression years, Fostoria introduced the Navarre crystal pattern in clear. It became the collection of choice on bridal registries in the 1940’s and is now very popular with Depression Glass collectors. The most coveted pieces for collectors are the pitchers, footed and ice lip, as well as the syrup and cruet, all of which can bring anywhere from $500 to $600 in the resell market.
In 1924 the company was one of the first to start a program of national advertising, and the first to produce complete dinner services in crystal. Besides their regular line of blown , etched and pressed patterns they did custom work, such as providing glass with government seals for officials in Washington. All the presidents from Eisenhower through Reagan ordered glassware from them. At one time Fostoria was the largest maker of handmade glassware in the United States, employing nearly one thousand people. By 1925, Fostoria’s factory had expanded to include five more furnaces. Primarily, the company produced decorative lamps and stemware pieces for the American home. The AMERICAN pattern, introduced in 1915, is still being produced by Lancaster Colony(who bought the Fostoria Company in 1983), making it the most successful pattern in the history of glassmaking. Fostoria’s business peaked in 1950 when they made over 8 million pieces of glass. Over the years they made a very wide range of items in their “American” pattern. Whole books have been written just on this one pattern (see below). The quality of the glass was high and the icecube pattern clearly defined. It is very popular with glass collectors today
